Stop calling Sihanoukville the next Macau: Official
Strong spigot of Chinese-led casino projects may have inadvertently given the Cambodian city a bad rap

KharismaPoker - A ranking military official in Cambodia echoed locals’ outrage over the ongoing flow of gambling-related investments into the kingdom’s most touristy coastal city, Khmer Time reported.Sihanoukville must become a city with its “own unique identity” as a tourist hub, independent from its growing status as a hotbed of Chinese-led casino projects, according to Royal Cambodian Armed Forces chief of joint staff Hun Manet.
“I agree to explore potential investments over the long term, but I do not agree to allow Sihanoukville to be like Macau,” he said during ground-breaking ceremonies Monday for a hotel project in Sihanoukville.Hun Manet’s comments follow a report compiled earlier this year by Preah Sihanouk Governor Yun Min that linked the increase in inbound Chinese capital to the rise of criminal networks, cybercriminals, and mafia groups in the province.Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Xiong Bo has since vowed swift retribution against erring compatriots.

“China supports the Cambodian government to take action against any Chinese criminals according to the law,” he said in a statement last month. “We will continue to cooperate and coordinate with the Cambodian government and fight against all illegal activities.”Two million tourists arrived in Preah Sihanouk province, which includes the city of Sihanoukville, last year. Nearly 120,000 of the 470,000 foreign arrivals consisted of Chinese nationals.
Sok Phal, director general of the Immigration Department, cautioned against sweeping generalisations, saying that cases of public nuisance and crimes related to Chinese nationals are relatively sparse
“We cannot look at 30 to 40 people who commit crimes and reflect that on another 50,000 to 60,000 people,” he said.
